So, the school year is done for students and teachers, which leaves me and my dear secretary Virginia and bookkeeper Debbye and counseling secretary Rhonda to hold down the fort. Of course, the custodians are doing their best to clean the fort, which makes things fun as summer school continues around the cleaning...We just got back from what is now an annual trip to minister and serve others. This year we went to Camp Sonrise in Pottersville, NY, and had an extraordinary week of service and glorifying and worshiping our awesome God. Looking forward to a week of vacation and a couple of conference trips. This will give me the chance to get my brain on straight as we get ready for the new year...this will be my 38th year of school, and I can't wait for opening day!
I have very few activities that give me great joy...watching my children, smoking a good cigar while sitting on the porch with my wife, watching the Cubs play baseball or Arsenal play soccer, leading a faculty meeting (okay, I'm WAY a school nerd...), you get the idea.So today I spent the morning cleaning the church. I realized half way through mopping the floor that I've always enjoyed this task, going back to summer Wednesdays spent with my Grandma Kline at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Woodland, Indiana, working with our dear friends Bud and Mary Freehauf getting the church ready for Sunday worship. There's something attractive about service, especially service to God. As I've gotten older, I've begun to realize the wonder of the psalmist when he wrote about spending his life in the house of the Lord. The peace of God, the honor of serving Him becomes central to who I am as I humble myself before Him, taking up a mop or emptying trash or cleaning the sink. Peace, humility, service.
